Bordered by the Canadian province of British Columbia to the north and the U.S. states of Montana and Wyoming to the east, Utah and Nevada to the south, and Oregon and Washington to the west, Idaho is twice as large as the six New England states combined.  With an abundance of scenic mountains, lakes, rivers and outdoor attractions, the state draws more than 20 million tourists eachyear. Idaho produces more potatoes and trout than any other state in the nation, and is known as the “Gem State” for the 72 types of precious and semi-precious stones it produces-some of which are exclusive to the state. Its state capital, Boise, is also its largest city with more than 200,000 residents.

Otter announces 2014 re-election run

Gov. Butch Otter announced at an event in north Idaho that he will run for re-election in 2014.

There has been rumors that this would be his last term and speculation about the politicians who might step in to a gubernatorial race in if Otter stepped out in 2014.

But it appears for naught. The Coeur d’Alene Press reported that Otter told a crowd of about 200 at the North Idaho Governor’s Ball that will he seek to hold his seat for another term.

The announcement was confirmed by KTVB in Boise, who talked with Debbie Field, a former legislator and Otter’s campaign manager.

If Otter is re-elected in 2014, he would be the first Idaho governor to hold three consecutive terms since Robert Smylie from 1954-1966.

The Idaho gubernatorial election will take place on November 4, 2014. Incumbent Butch Otter (R) is eligible for re-election, as Idaho has no gubernatorial term limits. The winner of the election will serve a 4-year term in office.

Idaho has a closed primary system, in which the selection of a party's candidates in a primary election is limited to registered members of that party.
