The history of New Jersey goes back to Dutch and Swedish communities established prior to settlement by the English.

1609 - Henry Hudson sails into Newark Bay.
After 1638 - Swedes and Finns predominated in the Delaware Valley.
1655 - Annexed by the New Netherlands colony.
1664 - The northernmost point of the Delaware was granted to Lord John Berkeley and Sir George Carteret.
Quintipartite Deed of 1676 - Divided the province into East and West Jersey. East was held by Carteret and West by Lord John Berkelry.
1681 - William Penn and 11 other Quakers bought East Jersey from Carteret's widow.
1702 - Voluntarily governmental powers were surrendered to the crown; still holding on to their rights to the land.
1738 - Lewis Morris appointed governor of New Jersey.
1740's - Land title disputes and opposition to the proprietors culminated in riots.
1776 - Provincial congress adopted a constitution and declared New Jersey a state.
